MercyCorps
MercyCorps is a non-profit NGO working in India's rural northern regions to bring education and opportunity. The people in these regions sustain themselves by growing tea or with subsistence farming. The region is stuck in a cycle of poverty despite the region's prime farmland. MercyCorps seeks to bring literacy and leadership skills to the area in order to encourage the youth and women to become entrepreneurs and to help the region to break out of the cycle and to help increase the standard of living in these areas. MercyCorps is also heavily committed to helping break out form the heavily patriarchal society.
MercyCorps works in more than just India. 95% of their staff is currently in failing states like Somalia and Afghanistan. They receive donations and volunteers from all over the world. Many of the volunteers they get are local to the areas they are assisting. This allows people to get into the habit of caring for themselves rather than having strangers do it for them. MercyCorps also works to create lasting solutions for world problems. For example, the healthy non-profitable food service they established in Indonesia has since become a profitable, Indonesian-run, food company. MercyCorps continues to work to establish a global system of help for those in need.
